JLPT N4 - Part 6: Conditionals 〜たら／〜と／〜なら／〜ば

Overview

• 〜たら: when/if (temporal & conditional).
• 〜と: natural result/whenever; instructions.
• 〜なら: supposition/“if it’s about …”.
• 〜ば: formal/neutral conditional.

Examples

• 雨が降ったら、試合は 中止です。— If it rains, the game is canceled.
• 春になると、桜が 咲きます。— When it becomes spring, cherry blossoms bloom.
• 日本なら、電車が 便利です。— If it’s Japan / speaking of Japan, trains are convenient.
• 早く 寝れば、明日 元気に なります。— If you sleep early, you’ll feel good tomorrow.

Subtleties

• と usually not used for volition/requests: ×雨が降ると 行きません。→ use たら/ば.
• なら often responds to information given by listener: A「北海道へ 行く」 B「北海道なら 夏が いいですよ。」
