The particle か is used to indicate a question in Japanese. It is placed at the end of a sentence, both in spoken and written form (especially in polite speech).
Common Wh- Words
- だれ — who
- なん/なに — what
- どこ — where
- いつ — when
- どれ — which
Basic Patterns

これは なんですか。
What is this? -
だれが 先生ですか。
Who is the teacher? -
たなかさんは いつ 来ますか。
When will Mr. Tanaka come?
Embedded Questions
In Japanese, question words + か can also form an embedded clause inside another sentence.
Example:
たなかさんが いつ 来るか、知っていますか。
Do you know when Mr. Tanaka will come?
