Japanese Grammar N5 - Part 9: Question Words & か

The particle is used to indicate a question in Japanese. It is placed at the end of a sentence, both in spoken and written form (especially in polite speech).


Common Wh- Words

  • だれ — who
  • なん/なに — what
  • どこ — where
  • いつ — when
  • どれ — which

Basic Patterns

  • これは なんですか。
    What is this?

  • だれが 先生ですか。
    Who is the teacher?

  • たなかさんは いつ 来ますか。
    When will Mr. Tanaka come?


Embedded Questions

In Japanese, question words + か can also form an embedded clause inside another sentence.

Example:
たなかさんが いつ 来るか、知っていますか。
Do you know when Mr. Tanaka will come?


Practice

Make questions with :

  1. たなかさん/どこ/います →
    Answer: たなかさんは どこに いますか。

  2. これは/いくら →
    Answer: これは いくらですか。
