Japanese Grammar N5 - Part 7: ある・いる (Existence) & Location

ある — existence for inanimate things.
いる — existence for animate things (people/animals).

Location particles: use に with あります／います to mark where something/someone exists.
Use で with action verbs to mark where an action happens (not with あります／います).

Patterns

• 場所に N が あります／います。
  There is N at/in 場所.

• N は どこに あります／いますか。
  Where is N?

Examples

• ねこ は つくえ の うえ に おもちゃ が あります。
  As for the cat, there is a toy on the desk. (inanimate → あります)

• つくえ の した に ねこ が います。
  There is a cat under the desk. (animate → います)
