Japanese Grammar N5 - Part 3: Particles は・が・を

は marks the topic (what you are talking about).

が marks the identifier (the subject that fits or answers an unknown).

を (o) marks the direct object of a verb.

Minimal pairs

(A) わたしは 学生です。 — As for me, I’m a student. (topic)

(B) 学生が います。 — There is a student. (identifying existence)

パンを たべます。 — I eat bread.

Q&A pattern

だれが 先生ですか。 — たなかさんが 先生です。
Who is the teacher? — Mr. Tanaka is the teacher.

たなかさんは 先生ですか。 — はい、先生です。
Is Mr. Tanaka the teacher? — Yes, he is.
