In Japanese, numbers are combined with specific counters depending on the type, shape, or category of the item being counted.

Common Counters

• つ — generic (used for 1–10)
• 人（にん） — people
• 枚（まい） — flat objects (paper, tickets, plates)
• 本（ほん） — long cylindrical objects (pencils, bottles, trees)
• 冊（さつ） — books, bound volumes
• 回（かい） — times/occurrences

For telling time and duration:

• 時（じ） — o’clock
• 分（ふん・ぷん） — minutes
• 時間（じかん） — hours (duration)
